FAQ's
What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-invasive treatment that uses detailed micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. The result creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles that help thicken and restore the look of fuller hair.
Is it detectable?
Scalp micropigmentation has become such an effective hair loss solution because of its consistently natural and undetectable results. Follicles technique is one that seamlessly replicates each individual hair follicle to create a perfect match for each client.
How many treatments should I expect?
Scalp micropigmentation should never be considered a one treatment process. Most clients can expect between 2-4 sessions to complete their treatment depending on the extent of hair loss or scarring. As you can see from the images below, the results is improved after each session, as each new layer is added to build density, coveage and color to get the perfect results. These treatments are usually spaced about 10-20 days apart.
How long do the results last?
After completion of your treatment (2-4 sessions) a client should expect the strength of the color to last for many years. Over a longer term, a client will very gradually begin to notice slight lightening (not discolor) of the treatment. When this occurs they can undergo a brief “touch up” session to restore any fading and secure many more years of their style.
Will this treatment work for women?
Yes. Scalp Micropigmentation is an excellent alternative to wigs, surgeries, or products that promise to thicken or re-grow your hair that never work. Scalp Micropigmentation cosmetically re-creates natural looking hair follicles on the scalp that add the look of density to thin hair. The results are immediate and you will leave from your 1st treatment with fuller looking hair and a renewed confidence.
What is the cost of this treatment?
Prices can vary, but generally speaking from $1,200 for a scar cover-up up through to around $3,600 for an individual who virtually has no hair at all and needs a more extensive treatment. The majority of our customers experiencing male pattern baldness spend between $1,800 – $3,200 and have a horseshoe pattern that requires a hairline, top, sides and blending. All treatments are priced individually based on the exact requirements of each client.
We also offer several discounts in order to make the cost more affordable. Additionally, financing is available for your scalp micropigmentation procedure.
Do you charge for a consultation?
No, we offer free consultations for anyone looking to learn about how scalp micropigmentation can help their hair loss.
Will it change color like tattoos?
No. Scalp micropigmentation is a form of permanent cosmetics, but unlike tattooing or permanent makeup, our pigment product is designed to fall within the same color spectrum of short cut hair. The pigment contains no additional colorants or additives and will only lighten, not discolor over an extended time.
Scalp micropigmentation also utilizes different equipment than traditional tattooing, ensuring the needle and machine are designed specifically for micropigmentation of the scalp.
Do I need to take time off work?
Scalp micropigmentation is non-invasive and requires no down time. In most cases, you will not need to take any extended time away from work, school, or other functions. After treatment it is common to notice slight redness on the scalp for 2-3 days post session. This redness subsides quickly and most clients return to work either right away or within a couple days. Clients are also allowed to wear hats or headwear should they feel the need.
How painful is he procedure?
For most clients here at Follicles, the pain is minimal and it's consistently less painful than traditional tattoos. After your session, you won't experience any further discomfort. Using a pain scale (see below) – pain is usually in the 1-3 mark rating
0 – No Pain
1-3 – Mild Pain
4-6 – Moderate Pain
7-10 – Severe Pain
How do I choose a hairline?
If you are unsure of what style or type of hairline will work for you, your treatment specialist will be there to help. With artistic experience on how to fit a hairline to head shape and age, your specialist can help recommend what’s best. Over the course of your sessions you can also tweak and adjust the hairline for a perfect result.
If I have hair left, can I leave it long?
Depending upon the pattern and extent of the thinning hair, some clients are able to maintain a longer length of hair. Scalp pigmentation can help thicken areas so that less of the scalp is seen showing through. However, if there is a strong pattern of hair loss or just not a lot of hair density left, the client is recommended to crop it shorter.
Can Scalp Micro- pigmentation camouflage my transplant scar?
Yes! By replicating tiny hair follicles inside the scarring and blending the color around the scarring area, transplant and surgical scars can see massive improvement in concealment.
Will Scalp Micropigmentation work with gray hair?
Yes, those with gray hair can still benefit from the scalp micropigmentation procedure. First, most clients are recommended to cut their hair to a short buzzed length. When this is done, gray hair does not appear as gray because the hair root itself is darker. Hair only shows gray as it gets longer. Second, we use a gray-scale pigment that can be adjusted in shade to blend with lighter hair tones. We simply create a lighter dilution for blending into the existing gray hairs.

Yes! We are able to match the shade of our pigment to a wide range of skin tones. Wether you are caucasian, black, hispanic, asian, or pacific islander scalp micropigmentation can work for you.
What is used for a Scalp Micro- pigmentation procedure?
The equipment used for a scalp treatment is considered micropigmentation or “permanent cosmetic” equipment. There are many different brands and designs and equipment includes a digital power source, a hand-piece, and a disposable micro needles for the insertion of pigment. Most technicians of Scalp Micropigmentation use different equipment than standard tattoo artists to ensure the deposits are delicately placed at the appropriate depth in the skin.
Can I still use Propecia and/or Rogaine after my treatment?
Clients can continue using Propecia during and after their scalp pigmentation procedure. Rogaine (topical minoxidil) should be suspended during the course of treatment and for 30 days post your final session. This is to ensure the proper healing and settling of pigment without interference of the chemicals found in Rogaine foam.
Can I wear a hat after treatment?
Yes. The scalp may be a bit reddish for 2-3 days post session, so we recommend wearing a hat after treatment if you wish to conceal the redness.
Can you help with FUE/FUT scaring?
Yes. We use our specialized scalp micropigmentation technique to deposit color matched pigment into the scar to reduce visibility.
What is the difference between scalp micropigmentation, hair tattoo, and scalp tattoo?
Scalp Micropigmentation is not just a traditional tattoo. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a form of permanent cosmetics, but unlike tattooing or permanent makeup, the treatment replicates the look of short cut hair by using pointillism techniques. Scalp Micropigmentation utilizes different equipment than traditional tattooing, ensuring the needle and machine are designed specifically for micropigmentation of the scalp.
